GALERIA ALICIA VENTURA

GROEN HOEK
East river community boathouse GROEN HOEK, New York.
The LINKING PARK project means for us a unique opportunity for the north of Brooklyn to reveal a new face. Our project emerges from two needs: we believe that is critical, on one hand, to open the neighborhood to the river, understanding the river as a new public domain, on the other, to show a new façade to the world.
The public space has to be the clue to create a pro-positive area, attractive, and capable to contribute better life standards, with a huge grade of emotional relationship with the place. In this sense, the area has to create the conditions to be capable to be built by it, and inside this process to create a new identity for the old industrial area in Brooklyn, an enormous space for the events, a chance to redevelop its means, inside that vast system called New York. In this way, we are looking for a way to build, more than a building, an artifact, creating an “open clasp” that finally configures the triangle formed by the space of the project, the historical center and the park, to begin to assemble a renovate identity inside the system of New York, in juxtaposition with the identity of Manhattan.
The complexity of this new space just can be represented by process or by means of mechanism of Brooklyn and its relation with Manhattan. This process is developed by the diagramatization of the place and the needs of the area and the project. As a result, the data creates a landscape of strips; a new territory without instructions of occupation, creating multiple folding that will configure this new public domain.
Creating this new public domain, we understand the area of Brooklyn with the perspective of the Olympics games; from this perspective Brooklyn has the opportunity to create a new façade to the world, a new encounter space that can be seen from the skyscrapers from Manhattan.
Taking advantage of this statement, the boathouse, with its exit to the river position, becomes a referential landmark of the change. It is the connection between Brooklyn and the gazes towards it. The project creates a link between the paths from the park until the river, creating a new promenade. At the same time, the square that is linked directly to the club, become the logical culmination of the promenade and it is related with the renovation of the industrial front, which has to occur to bring to the citizens new public spaces in the Brooklyn area. Thinking in the quality of this space and the relation with the club, we create an interior lake as a meeting point between public domain and the exit of the boats, it is a place that creates a “door” towards the river and at the same time a secure place for beginners to practice. The club is the “jewel” that closes the lake.
The club is formed by two perpendicular strips that generate the façade to the square that we mentioned before. The first strip, created with black stone to show a massif aspect, it is placed with the same directrix that the public space strips. Inside this piece are the spaces to build new boats (with an access point to the square and the gangway to the river), the administration office, the changing room and the lobby, that is in the intersection between the two blocks. The second strip is formed by a folding plane of green patinated copper. Here the program concerns to the Boat storage with an access point to the lake and the square, suitable for the loading and un-loading of boats and the non-water activities of the club. The other piece in this strip, folding itself creating an elevated space for the bar, is a privileged space with great views to Manhattan and Brooklyn, creating an amazing viewpoint and at the same time a landmark for this side of the river in contrast with the Manhattan outline.
The general idea arises from the concept of urban culture for the events, an idea that believes in the urban space as something that has to be experienced by the citizens, spaces to stay, to see, to gaze, to contemplate, not just spaces to connect areas, not just spaces” to go from here to there”, a new way to rediscover the urban condition of Brooklyn, a chance for Brooklyn to think what it is actually, and what it wants to be in the future...

COAA HUESCA
Official Architect’s Association of Aragón of the Huesca Department
From the public space
The setting up of the Official Architect’s Association of Aragòn of the Huesca Department comes up to the desire of a revitalisation of the historic centre with an emblematic location in which we can find roman ruins, the cultural heritage of the city.
The strategic position in such a compact urban fabric, register of the antique part of the city, in parallel with a complex program which gathers public and private use at the same time and on the other hand the singularity of a semi private street running across the lot and the conservation of the roman ruins, are some very strong and particular components to which the volumetric approach of the project refers. In the model, the conceptual sequences of the approaching process to the project show a certain concern about the regulation of this public – private duality.
The operative principal of the process in strips, generated by the different guiding lines of the adjacent streets, fragments and organizes at the same time the different programs of the Architect’s Association into blocks. This way appears the volumetric of the inclined roofs that take up the direction of the traffic axes existing in the close environment as directing lines of the lot, allowing a volumetric play that generates interesting interior spaces under cover and the continuity of the project
The semi-private public space, emphasised by the valuing of the roman ruins gets a particular connotation of an “open air museum. In this way, the building contributes to the increase in value of the historic heritage of the city of Huesco.
Magmatic Rock
The metaphor of compact, solid, organic rock comes from the geographical situation of Huesco in a close pre-Pyrenean environment. A sharp cut splits the rock in two parts creating the interior street.
Magmatic skin, rocky – that generates a noble relation with the environment – discreet and sober. A signal of renewal with respect.
Totally different from the treatment of the street, inside the interior street the section of the building is shown with nerve. A section through a void. The stone block cut and separated by a retaining wall, generating the interior street. Above this “open-private” space, inside the interior street, the building shows in an open, transparent, luminous way, showing its interior life. This facade is totally opposed to the almost opaque facades overlooking the historic centre, wrapping the building like a mysterious cloak stretched beyond the facade and spreading its trace to the pavement of the interior street. Vertical holes illuminate this skin punctually, like windows. Holes that act in this historic environment like an emphasizing focus and announce an event that one can find in its heart: the roman ruins.
The roman ruins like a conceptual factor
The project comes up around the revitalization of the roman ruins as an energy source coming from the ruins. As a metaphor, they evoke the magma coming up from the bowels of the earth, generating synergies and reverberations with the surrounding buildings. The emphasizing of the ruins like a light source for the surrounding buildings.
The pedestrian way that is generated from Plaza Urries until Calle Alfonso y Aragòn is a succession of sections of streets with punctual dilatations of the space, creating squares. In the interior street of the new building there is a first museum-square open towards part of the ruins. This open space encloses the ruins from the basement to the ground floor and is sheltered by the projection of the first floor. The ground floor is surrounded by a perimeter railing that enables almost an all embracing view of the historical site and at the same time it allows a visual dilatation of the interior spaces that look directly onto the roman ruins, like the lecture hall in the basement or the entrance and distribution hall in the basement and on the ground floor. From the ground floor towards the interior patio, in the area of the entrance hall, the separation is totally transparent allowing an optimal fluidity for the visual connection between the interior street towards the inside of the block.
A light and transparent metallic footbridge, acting as a special distribution, flies over these and gives access to the Architect’s Association.
A second dilatation takes place in the interior street, almost at the end, visually connected with Calle Alfonso y Aragón generating an urban balcony, to cover the drop between the two streets which allows enjoying visually the gathering of the streets, sitting on one of the benches standing under trees.
Time vector in architecture
The whole interior distribution of the plans in exclusively private use, except the reprography, is composed with mobile elements like shelving (bookcases or storage) with wheels (including brakes) and access doors to the enclosure. These mobile elements don’t reach the ceiling (2.20m) generating a spatial fluidity that allows to take in every floor in its entirety and allows to enjoy the formal complexity of the roof on the second floor.
The compartmentation of the different programmes with this type of furniture allows a quick reconfiguration of the space and a sustainable evolution as regards to new uses.

TRANSHOUSE

COLIN'S HOUSE
FAMILY HOUSE IN AIGUAXELIDA TEN DEGREES SOUTH OF LONDON
This project is much easier to explain than to understand. In architecture this happens very often. The project logic deals with unexpected situations, vertebrate as if it was a narrative thread, a kind of short movie. A little story with a happy end in this case, the house is finally built.
There are several prerequisites fundamental for a minimal understanding of the project. At university they would be called “Context”. In this case the context will be the story line of the project, the text with which we will write the script of the house. Our job will consist in structuring the text, the narration of the place.
The location is almost giving us the answers.
1.- Extended lot of 900m2. On the short sides it borders streets. On one long side it borders another property, on the other one a 3m wide path. Beyond the path there are a protected pine forest and the sea. Luckyly this last side is orientated towards South.
2.- The limits are as the usal in this kind of project, except the one alongside the path. There is no limit.
3.- The sun, the views and the geometry are all gathered on the same side, the one bordering the path.
4.- The site lays on a considerable but constant slope. It is about 10%.
5.- The norms tell us we should do an inclined roof.
6.- The client got involved into the project through a splendid dossier of references. We quickly found out that he masters the cult of image, that he shows a strongly hedonistic character. He lives and works in London. He is English.
The discription of the project is basically the solution of the project. We don’t need big conceptual structures to support our decisions. The architecture will be very rough, without ornaments. The lot is the project... and not much more. We don´t want to interfere more. The project comes to be as a sushi recipe, it plans moves, instead of putting together a process. The only condition is to be very rigourous with our decisions. We cannot let ourselves go into autocontemplation.
A.- Access level: -0.60 from the upper street. Entrance trough the garage.
B.- The living room opens towards the landscape, the views, the sea and the sun precisely where we can find the path. On one side there will be a 13x3 m big window. On the other side we had to raise the level to avoid indiscreet glances.
C.- A hall-stair divides the house into two wings. The stair with large landings leads 1.50 m up to the level of the living room and from the landings one can access the rooms on the lower floor.
D.- The hall-stair cannot be dark. We will insert a patio in every room. They will be a natural light source and will create an interior façade. From the rooms we will see the pine trees.
E.- The house is structured in two wings: living room and kitchen with the big window and the rooms with the bathrooms. The exterior façade of the rooms looks towards North. There are going to be 4 narrow windows but the façade will be more like a big blind wall. As the city council prefers inclined roofs, each wing will have a roof inclined towards the patios. Each part has its own structural logic. The volume containing the living room will be a metallic structure covered with a steel skin, a light volume. In order not to divide the 13x3 m window by any pillars there is a metallic beam. The other wing will be heavy, built with concrete and thermo clay. The volume is closed towards North, it shelters the rooms. One part of the house is exposed, the other one hides.
F.- Now we have to decide where the swimming-pool is going to be. Obviously the swimming-pool is part of the house too. It has to be entirely integrated to the house. We raised it on the one side facing the surroundings and lowered it towards the living room. As if the pool was floating. The sea is very close so the pool will be rather small. We finally decided to have one single lane following the long side of the lot, just like the house. The pool is 20x2 m big. Because of the inclination of the lot the pool will be free-standing in any way. The pool is hanging in the air, there is no other option. A concrete U, a huge beam out of water with a window at its end.
Once explained, the house can be understood. Every impediment leads to an architectonical disicion. Architecture is about taking decisions, not more than that. A decision a day is enough.
We could talk about artificial natures, reactive projects, indiscipline, extreme logics now. Or also about sensations, poetic images and phenomenology. However we prefer leaving these kind of topics to university, to conferences or to clients willing to listen.
For us this project is simply rough architecture.
